Listen to Ottawa first responders’ radio chatter as they learn about the train-bus collision

With multiple 911 calls coming in on Wednesday about a horrific crash between a Via Rail train and a double-decker city bus, Ottawa emergency crews rushed to the scene to survey the damage and help the injured. Radio calls sent back and forth between first responders reveal how the emergency response unfolded in real time.

The audio file below is an edited version of how Ottawa firefighters and paramedics realized the scope of the disaster, compiled by Ottawa Citizen crime reporter Shaamini Yogaretnam. The audio has been trimmed for length and non-essential details have been removed.

In the radio chatter, what starts out as a routine response quickly escalates as EMS arrive on the scene.

“We have a double-decker bus, front end of the bus has significant damage. Multiple patients on the ground,” one man is heard saying.

He later adds: “Update this to a mass casualty.”
