The Pursuit of Firefighting


One of the most controversial and highly scrutinized issues fire departments face today is the dispatch of fire personnel to emergency medical calls.  The public wants to know why their tax money is paying for a big, red, half a million dollar truck with three to five people in bulky pants onboard is being dispatched to a home, condo or other building.  They see the responders go inside.  As they wonder what they could be doing, they observe an ambulance pull up and continue to watch as two paramedics get a stretcher and some fancy looking gear and head on in.  The people in the bulky pants return to their truck start the loud diesel engine and drive away.  Several minutes later they see the paramedics emerge with an elderly woman on the stretcher, load her into the ambulance and drive away.  Now why on earth were those firefighters there…
