Public service job cuts in NSW and Queensland have triggered a rapid slide in popularity for the states’ conservative premiers, Barry O’Farrell and Campbell Newman. In Macquarie Street, plans have been unveiled to slash $1.7 billion from the education budget over four years, while north of the border the Newman government aims to lay off over 15,000 public sector workers under its recently released budget, adding to about 4,500 already gone since the Liberal-National Party came to power earlier this year.

Yesterday, thousands of protestors took to the streets of Brisbane at the behest of public sector unions to protest against cuts to the Queensland public service  – no mean feat in our era of deep and alarming political apathy.

The stated objective in both NSW and Queensland revolves around balancing government budgets with an eye to maintaining both states’ coveted AAA credit ratings. Much media coverage of the cuts…
